Biden-Harris Administration Announces $169 Million to Accelerate Electric Heat Pump Manufacturing as Part of Investing in America Agenda

Eight companies, including RTC sponsor Armstrong International, have been awarded a total of $169 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate the manufacturing of electric heat pumps across 15 sites in the country

This historic investment marks the first wave of projects funded through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda and utilizes the Defense Production Act (DPA) to strengthen domestic production of this critical clean energy technology. The selected projects will create over 1,700 high-quality jobs, predominantly in disadvantaged communities, aligning with President Biden’s prioritization of economic growth and justice in the energy transition. Armstrong International, a leading manufacturer of industrial heat pumps, will use the funding to further bolster its production capabilities and build a demonstration project at its facility in Three Rivers, Michigan.

The objectives for the investment in Armstrong International, Inc High Temperature Heat Pump Manufacturing are highlighted as:

The project will add 29,000 square feet to an existing facility to manufacture industrial heat pumps in the United States.  

The project has the potential to positively impact:  

  • the decarbonization of the United States, the capacity of industrial heat pump manufacturing in the United States, and
  • the creation of high-quality jobs and the development of in-demand technical skills.  

Through its Community Benefit Plan, Armstrong seeks to continue its long-standing commitment to the City of Three Rivers and St. Joseph County communities by:  

  • identifying new opportunities to engage with the community, especially Disadvantaged Communities (DACs),
  • creating new high-quality jobs,
  • providing workforce education and training,
  • continuing current practices to ensure a safe and healthy workplace,
  • reducing barriers and improving access to jobs for local and underrepresented workers,
  • including those from identified (DACs), and
  • striving to achieve the goal of at least 40% of jobs created as a result of this project filled by residents of identified DACs.
