Armstrong Perform: Circular Thermal℠ Takes Center Stage

The Armstrong Heat Transfer Group was asked to help a customer with their boiler stack emissions. The customer was facing pending legislative action in relation to boiler stack emissions and wanted to accomplish two goals. One, was to prove that they could reliably reduce emission temperature coming out of the flue stack. Two, was to evaluate how much energy could be transferred to another process.

Partnering with the local rep, the team tackled the problem by providing a 6-row liquid coil with baked phenolic coating plus the transitions sized to fit the flue stack. Water was circulated in the coil back to a cooling tower ultimately lowering the flue gas temperature below dew point. Data has since been gathered by the customer to determine how much energy can be transferred somewhere else in their process. Three years in, the system has been working great and an evaluation of the coils during the latest shutdown show the bottom two rows of the coil have seen aggressive corrosion while the rest of the coil looks as good as new. The Armstrong Heat Transfer Group provided an updated solution utilizing two separate coil banks (2-row & 4-row) in a drawer style casing. This allows the smaller coil to be sacrificial and removed quickly and cost effectively, while the larger coil remains in service for the long haul.
