What is Water Hammer?

November 17th, 2020

Inquiring minds want to know…

We have all heard it – that bang, that loud stutter from inside the pipe. It, literally, sounds as if someone is pounding on the equipment with a large hammer. And water hammer, like the actual hammer, can cause significant damage to your equipment.

So what exactly is water hammer? Water hammer is a shock wave, transmitted through fluid contained in a piping system. It occurs when fluid in motion is suddenly forced to stop moving, and frequently occurs at pump shut down. This video, developed by our partners at DFT, gives an excellent visual of the why and what can be done to alleviate the problem.
